For admissions to the undergraduate courses of the academic session of 2020, the varsity has received a huge number of applications this year, which is the highest in the past three years. Added to this, there has also been a significant rise in the percentage of students who have scored 90% or above in their 12th CBSE examinations. Both these reasons, collectively, might lead to a consequential rise in the DU cut-offs 2020 for admissions in UG courses.
Cut-offs directly proportional to number of applications
Principals and professors of various colleges have forecasted this on the premise that the cut-offs are always directly proportional to the number of applications received. The principal of Ramjas College, Mister Manoj Khanna said that since long, colleges have adopted adequate precautions in order to avoid a greater number of admissions, under a cutoff. However, he added that the cut-offs will be set keeping in mind the fact that students are likely to apply to a wide range of colleges and will have multiple options. Hence, the varsity is deciding on setting higher cut-offs initially.
Changes in the admission process
A change that was brought in the admission process of this year, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, was that candidates could apply for all the courses. It was done to ensure that the registration process is smooth for the students because many State boards and CBSE had not announced their results by that time. The registration process for admissions into Delhi University ended on 31 August 2020. For about just 70,000 undergraduate seats, there were as many as 3,53,918 applications. There was a clear rise of about 1,00,000 applications when compared to the previous year.
More variables, more ambiguity
Anju Srivastava, principal of Hindu College, said that because there are larger variables this time and students can apply for any course, colleges will face the ambiguity in deciding cut-offs, which will either be the same as last year or marginally higher.
The number of students who secured 95% and above this year has jumped by 118.6% and those who have scored 90% and above have increased by 67.48%. Mrs. Srivastava said that if they went by data, a 100% cut-off would even fall short and hence, they might be relying on their experiences more than ever this time.
