Getting higher education is a costly affair! But scholarships lend a helping hand to students who are seeking to pursue their higher studies in India or abroad.
Recently, the delegation of the European Union to India organized an event to celebrate the success of 161 Indian students who were awarded the Erasmus Mundus scholarship for the Joint degree programs in the EU starting in the academic year 2022-23. With this many students getting this prestigious scholarship, India has ranked first amongst 167 nations!
Erasmus Mundus is one of the most sought-after scholarships for Indian students who wish to study abroad. Here is how you can apply for this scholarship.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarships: Details
Erasmus Mundus stands for European Region Action Scheme for Mobility of University Students. This program was established in 1987 to support the training and education of youth across the world. The program is supported by an international partnership of at least three HEIs or Higher Education Institutions (two institutions are from EU member states while 1 is from any participating country of the Program).
With a huge budget of over INR 2,00,000 crore for the duration of 2021 to 2027, Erasmus Mundus presently has participation from 3,00,000 students and professionals from 167 countries.
The scholarship program offers Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters delivered by multiple higher education institutions across various countries. At the end of the Joint Master’s program, either a joint degree or multiple degrees shall be awarded to the student.
Eligibility for Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
The program is open to students from Master's levels from all over the world. There are two applicant categories for the scholarship program:
- Applicants from Program Countries and
- Applicants from Partner Countries.
Program Country applicants include citizens from:
- EU countries
- Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
- Iceland
- Liechtenstein
- Norway, and
- Turkey
Citizens not belonging to the above countries are Partner Country applicants. A partner country applicant is only eligible to apply if:
- They have not resided in an EU country for 12 consecutive months in the last five years,
- You had not received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship prior to the current application.
Apart from the above criteria, one must have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institute to be eligible for the scholarship program. Those in the final year of a Bachelor's degree are also eligible to apply but they must graduate before the Erasmus Mundus Master’s program starts.
Course Details
Erasmus Mundus Master’s courses range across fields such as Engineering, Law, Business, Economics, etc. The duration of each edition of the Master's program ranges from 1 to 2 years.
Every Master's course has a different consortium of universities that made it. Hence, during the course, the student may have to study in different countries in Europe where these Universities are situated.
What all does the Scholarship include?
The scholarship amount depends upon the duration of your course. It is important to note that scholarships for students outside the European Union are higher than for those who are EU citizens. Under the scholarship scheme, the following are covered:
- Tuition fees
- A living allowance of 1,400 Euros per month for 24 months
- Health insurance
- Around 3,000 Euros extra scholarship every time you need to shift your University.
- Different language courses and events
- Initial payment for visas and travel expenses before the start of the course.
How to apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?
One may apply online for the scholarship using the application form available on the official website. Before applying, an applicant may need the following documents:
- Transcript of records from Bachelor’s degree
- Proof of English command (IELTS or TOEFL)
- Biometric page of your passport
- A motivation letter
- Reference letters from professors or colleagues
- Resume
The application process for the academic year 2022-23 is closed. In case you wish to apply for the next session, the applications usually start around October and end by February, depending on the program. Hence, it is a good idea to keep all your required documents ready by September to be able to apply as soon as the application process starts to avoid missing deadlines.
