Business education has seen a rise in the number of females who decide to pursue a career that starts at a B-School. It is encouraging to see that women will be outnumbering men in this graduate class, as it is usually not the case. IIM Rohtak, in July, reported that the incoming MBA class at their institute would be having a record 69% of women. It is a joyous moment to see that the rise in female admits to an IIM wasn't a one-off occurrence but an emerging trend. While welcoming a new batch this year, IIM Kozhikode has had an astounding response from women, with 52% of the fresh class being female applicants. The institute, in 2013, had 54.3% of women in its graduating class.
Debashish Chatterjee, Director, IIM Kozhikode, said, “There has been a steady rise in our commitment to ensure gender diversity in this past decade and the journey towards creating equal opportunities in society and business.” Not only is this a milestone achievement for the institute, but it also sends a message out to women all over the country that nothing is unattainable for them.
The Director also stated that the institute is committed to contributing to the growing trend of women leaders in the coming years. Other institutes should follow the lead of IIM Kozhikode and IIM Rohtak, and encourage more female applicants by aiding them in the admission process.
As per Chatterjee, the coming batch is diverse in more ways than just challenging the existing gender disparity between men and women. It is also academically diverse with disciplines such as arts, architecture, commerce, medicine, and sciences. 10% of the students also hold professional degrees and certifications.
The class is also a diverse cultural mix with students from northern India (35%), southern India (14.8%), eastern India (13.41%), and western India(14.8%), central India (5.69%), and north-eastern India (2.03%).
IIM Kozhikode and IIM Rohtak, with their decision of having a more female-centric approach during admissions, have set a precedent that other B-Schools can pick from. IIMK will begin its classes online from August 12. Kicking off the new session with a virtual orientation, the institute is chalking out a plan to bring students back to the campus while following all physical distancing norms once the situation improves.
