IIT Ropar, IIT Indore shine in THE Young University ranking

The Times Higher Education (THE) Young University ranking features 414 universities this year. This is a higher number compared to 351 in 2019. This ranking is for the newer varsities, which have been established less than 50 years ago. While no Indian university could make it to the ‘50 under 50’ category of THE Young University ranking, two institutes - IIT Ropar, and IIT Indore were in the top 100.

According to the 2020 ranking, the best young institute in India is IIT Ropar (62nd overall rank) and IIT Indore (64th overall rank) is a close second. It is notable, however, that the former scored 0 percent in the international students’ category.

There are five parameters based on which the young university ranking is finalized:

    • Teaching

    • Research

    • International outlook

    • Industrial output

While the first three criteria have a weightage of 30 per cent each, international outlook accounts for 7.5 per cent. The industrial output has a weightage of 2.5 per cent.

IIT Ropar is a fairly young institute, it was established just 12 years ago. It is a globally competitive institute, according to the director, Sarit K Das. In an official statement, he attributed the success to the faculty, students, and staff.

IIT Ropar has also fared well in the overall THE rankings, Asia University Rankings as well as the NIRF National ranking, where it was ranked the best university in the Punjab-Himachal Pradesh-Chandigarh region.

Other Indian institutes that were mentioned by THE Young University rankings were:

101-150 band: IISER Pune, IIT Gandhinagar
151-200 band: Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, IIT Bhubaneshwar, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad
