Infosys may look at hiring people with Google career certificates in India after testing this program of hiring in the US. This probable change in the hiring process by Infosys, which is a global leader in digital services and consulting, may completely change the way other similar technology companies hire people.
Details of the Google career certificates
In the US a total of 130 firms use these Google career certificates as a medium of hiring including Infosys, Cognizant, Accenture.
The Google career certificates offer programs in 4 areas that are as follows:
- Data Analytics
- Project Management
- User Experience(UX) design
- Associate Android developer certification
The candidates can complete these courses in a span of three to six months. These courses will be equivalent to the four-year degree in the related field as per Senior Vice President of Global Affairs, Google, Kent Walker.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, Alphabet Inc. said that in India, we’re working to make certificates more accessible and launch an employer consortium. And in addition to Career Certificates, they’re also making cloud computing, big data, and machine learning training free for US job seekers to help prepare for jobs in these high-growth fields.
KrishShankar, Infosys HR head also said that they think this is evolving. There are three or four areas, for example- UX, Analytics, and Android. Those are three or four areas where there will be courses taught by Google on Coursera. And if people pass it, they will get those certifications. If these are skills that are needed, and they are found right, they will be happy to explore that even in India. But they want to see how it goes in the US first.
How will it affect the hiring process in the IT industry?
In India, software companies such as Infosys, TCS, HCL, Wipro, etc have been hiring students in large numbers from engineering colleges all over the country. But if Infosys starts hiring people with Google career certificates, it will further boost the shift in the hiring pattern of technology companies that have been changing from degree-based to skill-based since the past few years.
KrishShankar also added that they think while it has huge potential, things like Coursera courses have been there for some time. Google adds a little bit of their own thing, and it gets a brand there. So, let's see how it goes. But he thinks these are positive developments that they’ll be open to look at.
