This is How MECE Approach Helped Team Flipinstein from NITIE Mumbai Bag the Title of National Winners of Flipkart WiRED 5.0 (Supply Chain track)
It was a feeling which cannot be expressed in words. Winning a prestigious case competition like Flipkart WiRED 5.0 was one of the most happiest moments of our B-School life. Here is our journey of becoming the National Winners of Flipkart WiRED 5.0 (Supply Chain Track).
Flipkart is one of the fastest-growing e-commerce companies in India. We always wanted to know this industry better and WiRED gave us a chance to not only know this industry but to solve the basic problems that the industry faces.
Winning strategy behind lifting the trophy of National Winners of Flipkart WiRED 5.0
We followed a MECE approach in our preparation - everyone was responsible for everyone's task. As per time availability, we divided tasks among ourselves but worked and brainstormed on them collectively. Preparations started with discussion among ourselves and long hours of debates.
The challenging phase was the initial rounds as we had to come up with something that could strike the right approach to solutions and it was very difficult to develop solutions according to it. The processes were very complex and finding solutions which is suitable for all stakeholders was critical. From the complete phase of Round 1 submission till the last finale day, we kept this case as our priority and devoted most of the time to it.
When it came to idea finalizing, we all used to be there no matter what, and in other times like research or solution framing, we used to divide the time so that at least 12hrs per day is devoted to the case. That's how our team bonding helps us to make it successful.
Also, let’s be clear that every good team faces conflicts and disagreements. We too had a lot of differences of opinion. The best part of a team of 3 is that there will be a clear majority and there cannot be a tie. We took the disagreement to others, explaining our logic and then asking them to give their opinions. Our basic fundamental to resolve any conflicts related to the idea was to go back to square 1 and think what's the purpose of this case and then do a why analysis of the solution. Why this solution why not others. This was how we resolved many conflicts amicably.
We made sure we gave each other ample amount of time to work themselves and also had meetings together in quick successions to ensure everyone is on the same track. Even on the virtual platform we stayed together listening to old Hindi songs, leg-pulling, and at the same time brainstorming for the solutions.
When we work together, we win together!
Our team's forte would be commitment and freedom of expression of views. We generated lots of valid points of improvement with argumentative yet informative discussions. As a team, everyone took the responsibility for arriving at the best solution even if the task was divided among the three of us. We took complete responsibility for the areas we were strong at and helped other team members to complete the task on time.
Putting it in other words, we would say that in-depth brainstorming and honesty in commitments helped us come out with flying colors. This is how we helped each other and drafted the best solution.
During our journey we learned a lot about collaborative working, breaking down the bigger problem and solving it as a smaller module. We developed an in-depth understanding of the e-commerce value chain & the pertinent problems of demand variability. Skills like team working, deep-diving & following a modular approach to solving a problem are what we learned and executed.
