- The IIM Act 2017
The talk of bringing NITIE (National Institute of Industrial Engineering) Mumbai under the IIM banner has been doing the rounds for months. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Education (MoE) even formed a committee to deliberate on the matter. The committee’s purpose was to check NITIE’s feasibility to meet the conditions under the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Act, 2017.
As per reports, in April 2022, NITIE began making changes to its infrastructure to meet the IIM standards. The cost for the development plan was expected to be around INR 160, a major chunk of which came from the Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA).
The news has once again gained traction as the Government has listed 24 bills for the upcoming monsoon session of the Parliament. One of the bills listed proposes renaming NITIE Mumbai as the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai.
It is interesting to note that this proposal came to light just as the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released its list of top-ranking colleges and universities in India. As per the list, the ranking for IIMs remains almost similar. However, NITIE Mumbai has jumped to the 9th position in the management category, from its previous placement at 12.
What do you think? Is it time for IIM Mumbai to join the league?
About NITIE
National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) Mumbai is one of the top business schools in India. It was established back in 1963 and is currently operating under the Ministry of Education (MoE).
The institute is known for its expertise in operations and the supply chain management segments. However, post-graduate diplomas offered by the institution span various fields of management and industrial engineering.
The five post-graduate programs offered by NITIE are:
- Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management (PGDIM)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Management (PGDSM)
- Post Graduate Program for Executives (PGPEX-VLFM)
These programs are continually updated to meet the changing needs of global industrial standards.
The fee structure for the courses varies but still remains a lot lower in comparison to the top IIM (ABC). As a result, many students find the return on investment from NITIE to be higher in comparison and hence flock to it in number. The placement scene at NITIE is also excellent owing to the fact that the institute ranks well across boards.
The IIM Act 2017
The decision to convert NITIE to an IIM comes under the IIM Act of 2017. As per this Act, the Ministry of Education has declared all IIM, institutions of national importance. The Act also stipulates the formation of a board of directors, academic council, and coordination forum for all IIMs. Each of these entities has a set of duties and responsibilities to ensure the smooth functioning of the respective IIM.
Seems like if the bill to take NITIE under the IIM banner passes in the parliament the name for the institution will change for the third time. However, the question remains, what will it mean for its students, the fee structure, and the faculty?
