Quad Fellowship Program For Indian Students In STEM; Opportunity For Fully-Funded Graduate Studies In The US!

The application process for the first round of Quad Fellowship has started for students from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics -STEM streams who want to pursue graduate programs in the US. Only students from the Quad countries - India, Australia, Japan, and the US are eligible to apply for the fellowship program.

According to the official notification, the fellowship period will begin in August 2023, and the last date to complete the preliminary application is 30th June 2022. The selected Quad Fellows will receive a one-time scholarship amount of USD 50,000 which can be used for any purpose related to academics. 

What Is The Quad Fellowship? 

The Quad Fellowship was announced in September 2021 as a first-of-its-kind funding program designed to build ties among the brightest STEM minds from the Quad countries. It was launched with much fanfare by the leaders of the Quad countries on 24th May 2022. Under the scholarship scheme, a total of 100 students - 25 from each of the Quad countries - will be able to pursue Master's/ Doctoral programs in the US.

The fellowship program is an educational initiative of the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fund For Strategic Innovation which is operated and managed by Schmidt Futures - a philanthropic arm of the main organization. As part of the Quad fellowship, the selected candidates will receive one-time funding of USD 50,000.

The amount can be used for all academic expenses, such as books, tuition, research, living expenses, and other fees. Additionally, the ticket fares for a one-way round trip to the US are also included in it. The fellows can also apply for additional need-based funding of up to USD 25,000 to cover the costs of completing the studies.

The aim of the fellowship is to develop a network of science and technology experts who will promote innovation and facilitate collaboration in the private, public, and academic sectors. 

Eligibility Criteria For The QUAD Fellowship

The following eligibility criteria have been mentioned for successfully completing the Quad fellowship 2022 application. It is necessary to check the eligibility details carefully before applying for the fellowship program.

• At least 18 years of age at the time of application is mandatory.
• Both legal and permanent residence of the applicant should be in Quad countries i.e India, Japan, Australia, and the US.
• Must have completed a bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline by August 2023.
• Demonstrated an acumen of superior academic performance at the undergraduate level.
• Candidates who are currently enrolled in Masters’ or Ph.D. programs are also eligible to apply for the Quad fellowship. However, they need to ensure that they are already enrolled in a qualified academic program during their time as a fellow (August 23 - May 24). 

Timeline For The Quad Fellowship

The Quad Fellowship Program has been divided into three main elements, according to the official website. Each of these elements defines the stages of the fellowship program progressively. Let’s take a look at what each of them means and their purpose.

Pre program: This is the first phase of the fellowship program where the selected students will receive access to several virtual resources and programming. The graduate admission process is not yet complete at this stage, but students can use the tools to network with other students in batches to get a clearer idea of the process and expectations.

Core program: Fellows will get the chance to join the core program once they have finished the pre-program stage. The core program will begin in August and extend to the end of the academic year. As part of the core program, the students will take part in a residential experience, followed by virtual programming opportunities which will enhance their understanding of the intersection between STEM and society.

Alumni program: The alumni program is designed as lifelong network support for the Quad fellows. Through this program, the fellows will be able to network across cohorts and with scholars from the Quad countries.

How To Apply For The Quad Fellowship?

The registration process for the Quad Fellowship has started and the application process will begin soon. In order to apply for the Quad Fellowship, the candidates will require three letters of recommendation and the transcripts of all academic records in English.

The Quad Fellowship authorities have instructed candidates to reach out to the recommenders in advance and seek the letters so that the process can be completed smoothly and on time.
