Mathematicians From NIT Rourkela-Team Misfits Won 2nd Runner-up Title Of Tally CodeBrewers 2022 Wizard Of System Programming

Tally CodeBrewers 2022 was a hiring challenge conducted by Tally Solutions with enticing prizes up for grabs. The primary objective of this challenge was to reach out to the next generation of engineers and give them a peek into the world of product development. The opportunity piqued our interest and the three of us- Chandrachud Pati, Dibyansika Biswal, and Ravi Shankar, decided to partake in the challenge. 

We are the Team Misfits from at NIT Rourkela and are pursuing an integrated MS in Mathematics. Coming from a mathematics background, we entered the competition with low expectations. And we are elated for having won the 2nd runner-up title for the Wizard of System Programming Track, despite that. Here’s a little more about our journey in the Tally CodeBrewers 2022. 

Applying Theory To Practice

We are all pure mathematicians so we have ample knowledge about the theoretical side of system programming but had never used it in practical application. But there's a first time for everything. The problem statement provided to us in the second round of the competition was top-notch. While working on the solution to this statement, we learned how to apply the theoretical concepts from data structure, algorithms, low-level design, and operating systems to practice. 

The time given to accomplish this task was a point of concern in the challenge. We had to strategize, design, and come up with a working product in 48 hours. But it was a unique experience, and we’ll remember every moment of it. It was a lot of fun trying new things out. 

The Importance Of Strong Bond And Teamwork 

Since we only had 2 days to come up with the whole solution and present the demo to the mentors, we had to use the time judiciously. Fortunately, the three of us share a strong bond and we complement each other completely. This helped us avoid any conflict and perform to the best of our abilities. 

Our bond and teamwork were the two things that helped us stay on track, despite the chaos around us since we were shifting to our hostels on the same weekend. So in those two days, we spent 19+ hours meeting each other over video and voice calls to work on our strategy and problem solution. 

The Enriching Feedback From Our Mentor

The mentor assigned to us was super friendly and extremely helpful. They assisted us wherever possible and it was their advice that helped us tweak our solution to take it to the next level. The feedback we received, made us realize that there is a scope for improvement in our solution. And we marched on to implement the changes before making the final presentation to the jury.

Both the demo round with mentors and the final round with the jury were extremely enriching. Receiving positive feedback and comments from the panel after 48 hours of slogging through it all, felt blissful. 

We feel great about the fact that despite being students of Mathematics we bagged a podium finish in our first ever hackathon. On this note, we’d like to tell everyone- don’t put yourselves in a box. Try everything and anything that your heart desires, you never know how things are going to end. #BeUnstoppable
