On Wednesday, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) kicked up its 2021 placement season, with many students getting more than INR 2 crore packages. One amongst them is Rohit Negi from IIT Guwahati who has been offered a package of INR 2.05 crore from Uber, reporting increased compensation packages and a jump in the number of students being given jobs.

Hailing from a lower middle-class family, Rohit’s journey to success began from a Tier-3 engineering college (Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Engineering & Technology, Ghurdauri) from where he completed his B.Tech in 2020.

His urge to achieve greater heights made him prepare for GATE 2020, wherein he secured an All India Rank of 202. Thereafter, he took admission in IIT Guwahati to pursue M.Tech CSE and has now landed a job at Uber.
Uber's 2 Crore Uber-Fan Club
Uber has purportedly made Rs 2 Crore+ offers to nearly all of the top 8 IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi (the placement report has not been shared yet), IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, and BHU).
Even though the base salary for Uber's 2 crore offer has yet to be made public, as per Rohit the base pay for its 2.05 crore offer is $128,250 (roughly 96 lakh rupees).

In addition to the base pay, Uber's offer includes stock options, joining bonuses, relocation bonuses, and performance bonus payments. Several of these are one-time awards. However, it's predicted that the annual in-hand compensation would be something in the neighbourhood of 1.4 crores.
A high-rise for IIT Guwahati
According to reports received from IIT Guwahati, more than 200 jobs were offered to students in the first half of the first day compared to the first day of the previous year's session.
“Multiple domestic offers above Rs 1.1 crore and one international offer of Rs 2 crore were made at the end of session 1. The big recruiters of this year’s first day session include Uber, JP Morgan Chase, Schlumberger, Graviton, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Texas Instrument, Bajaj, Qualcomm, Goldman Sachs among others,” the institute said in a statement.
It is for the first time in the recent three years that IIT-Guwahati students have got 179 pre-placement offers. Information technology/software, finance, and analyst and product profiles were the most common areas of interest amongst recruiters.
