She secured All India Rank (AIR) 68 in the Union Public Service Commission, Civil Services Examination (UPSC CSE) of 2012. During her probation, she received the Ashok Bambawale Memorial Award and Certificate, which was awarded to an IAS probationer for outstanding performance. 

Prior to becoming an IAS officer, she had already cleared the IIT and IIM entrance exams. She went on to receive her engineering degree from the reputed IIT Delhi and her MBA degree from the esteemed IIM Bangalore. Both IIT Delhi and IIT Bangalore ranked second in the NIRF 2023 rankings for engineering and management colleges, respectively. 

Mittal, who has also written columns on exchange rates and inflation for the Hindu Business Line, recently took to Twitter and shared her personal tips and strategies to crack the UPSC CSE, IIT, and IIM.

  • Remain committed and motivated throughout your preparation.
  • Every week, review your phone usage and the apps you use. Ask yourself how much time you are wasting on mobile apps!
  • Early morning study habits are the best. Therefore, in order to maximize your time in the morning hours, keep your alarm clock far away from your bed so that when you get up and walk to turn off the alarm, you won't be tempted to go back to sleep again but be motivated to start your study.
  • Study for 90 to 120 minutes straight with a 15-minute break in between to sharpen her attention. 
  • Try the Tratak meditation technique, which entails focusing on one object in order to increase your concentration. 
  • Get close to nature by taking a walk or sitting in the park.
  • Get yourself exposed to sunlight for at least 5- 10 minutes daily. 
  • Go for an outside physical exercise with at least a 20-minute walk.
