DU Bracing Up To A New Start; Commences 4-Years UG Program, Students To Get More Flexibility

After a gap of about 9 years, the University of Delhi is all set to implement the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) after getting approval from the Academic Council. The new framework has been prescribed under the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2022 and will offer four-years undergraduate programmes with multiple entry and exit options. Proposed to be a student-centric framework, the new framework is designed keeping in mind research prospects, employability, international standards as well as national interest. 

The 2022-23 academic batch will be the first batch to study the four-year undergraduate curriculum at Delhi University. 

Details of the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF)

In line with the new National Education Policy (NEP), the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022 (UGCF) will have a hybrid mode of learning i.e. both online and offline with multiple entry and exit points. The multiple entry and exit options will provide flexibility to students and will give qualifications based on the number of years they have studied which will be as follows: 

• Certificate for completing one year
• Diploma for completing two years
• Degree (three-year or four-year) shall be provided on completion of the course. 

There will be 176 credits for a four-year honors degree and 132 credits for a three-year honors degree. Students can choose between the said degrees. 

Delhi University (DU) is the first central university to adopt Undergraduate Curriculum Framework.

Another proposed feature of the UGCF 2022 is the ‘Academic Bank of Credits’. The credit bank will be an academic repository of the credits earned by students during their college years. It allows students the flexibility to leave a course and restart it from where they left after a certain period of time. Through this credit bank, the movement of students within a university (i.e. from one course to another), and across universities (from one institute to another) will also be feasible.

NOTE: Students will compulsorily have to study - Environmental Science and Sustainable Development courses in 1st and 2nd year. Also, they will need to choose one of the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution in the first two semesters. 

During the fourth year of the 4-year degree program, students will have to select three elective courses for the two semesters. The majority of the credits in the final two semesters will be from the dissertation or academic project whose topic can be related to the student’s minor or major subject. However, there is a distinction made between a dissertation and an academic project. The students going for dissertations would get the ‘Bachelor of Field of Study (Honours with Research) in (Discipline)’ and those going for academic projects would receive ‘Bachelor of Field of Study (Honours with Academic Project)’

The four-year undergraduate programme was earlier introduced in 2013 but scrapped the same year after the Delhi University’s faceoff with regulator University Grants Commission (UGC) leading to DU's climbdown.
