After giving the GMAT/GRE exam aspirants ideally take 11-12 weeks to complete 4-5 MBA applications. Most applicants plan their MBA applications well in advance. But what is the ideal time to start the process of creating a successful MBA application? Here is a round-up of the process in detail.

The process of building an impactful MBA application can be divided into four stages:

  1. Foundation stage
  2. Initiation stage
  3. Development stage
  4. Decision stage

Foundation stage

  1. It should be started as early as possible and at least 2 years prior to your MBA start date. The candidates should consider what can be changed in their professional careers in order to strengthen their MBA application.
  2. Certain points that should be considered are extracurricular activities (if any), leadership, and teamwork.
  3. Preparation for GMAT/GRE exam. Candidates should start their GMAT preparation and plan to take the exam. As the competition has been increasing every year, try to prepare for the standardized tests with complete dedication, it will also reflect your academic potential and hence a good score can be a big plus point for you. The GMAT test score remains valid for 5 years.
  4. Candidates should try to set their sights on future recommenders and establish a good relationship with them. Also since these recommendations depend on a third person so you should be extra careful and complete this process well in time to avoid any future issues. Try to get them from a current supervisor as some schools specifically ask for that.
  5. It is always a good idea to make a visit to the B-Schools that interest you as you get to know more about its culture and motivation to get in its premises.

Initiation stage

  1. Visit B-School websites to learn about programs, registration dates, and the admissions requirements. This should start 1-1.5 years prior to your MBA starts.
  2. Contact the students and alumni of the B-Schools you are interested in. If you need more guidance regarding the MBA application process you can also contact reputed MBA admissions consulting services that will help you to start the process and limit your missteps in the creation of your MBA application.

Development stage

  1. If the candidate hasn’t taken the GMAT already, take it as soon as possible and choose the MBA program you wish to apply for. This stage of developing your MBA application should start at least 2-3 months prior to deadlines.
  2. Start writing your CV/resume and applications for each B-School you are interested in. The CV, though is usually a one-page document but creating one that is submission worthy requires extensive introspection and efforts. The same applies to essays too as they can play a very important role in getting you shortlisted, therefore, demand a lot of time.
  3. Application forms should also be filled beforehand because some schools have extremely detailed forms. Also if they are completed early you can get more time to focus on other aspects of your MBA application such as essays, CV, etc.
  4. Explain the process to your recommenders and request them to assist you in the same.
  5. After the applications are submitted start preparing for interviews.

Decision stage

  1. Decide which B-School you finally want to study in and submit their scholarship applications.
  2. Participate in a welcome weekend, if conducted on campus.
