After graduating in Economics from Symbiosis International University (Pune), I made a bold decision to leave a high-paying Finance job and venture into an internship with a marketing firm - a decision driven by passion alone, made easier with the support of those around me. During my time there, the desire to pursue an MBA degree provided a similar rush. With the last date of the application approaching, I began my research and CAT exam preparation, preparing for the intense competition that lay ahead.

Embarking on the CAT preparation journey can undoubtedly be overwhelming, and with just one month to ace the CAT doubts arose about its feasibility. However, fueled by determination and a stroke of luck, I pushed forward to make it possible. Join me as I recount my quest to achieve a 94 percentile in CAT, with a stellar 99 percentile in VARC (and admittedly, a less stellar 55 percentile in QA) as I secured a spot in one of the top B-schools in the country, IMT Ghaziabad.

CAT Exam Prep: An Unexpected Strategy

My preliminary research about the CAT examination prep opened the door to a strategy that was a blessing in disguise. It revealed that excelling in one section (99 percentile+) could compensate for an average performance in the rest, igniting my focus on conquering the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) section while ensuring a balanced preparation for the others. However, this strategy came with a fair share of unpredictability and doubts.

With only 30 days remaining, I took the gamble and plunged in, determined to make the most of it. Here were my key areas of focus:

  1. VARC: I recognized my strengths and challenges, making VARC my primary focus. Delving into comprehensive study materials, honing my reading speed, and mastering comprehension techniques became my mission. I wouldn’t settle for a sub-99 percentile at any cost.
  2. DI-LR and QA: While VARC took precedence, I understood the importance of the DI-LR and QA sections. Striking a fine balance, I engaged in rigorous problem-solving sessions, tackled numerous mock tests, and studied previous years' papers. My approach was to be "master of one, jack of some" – focusing primarily on the topics most frequently repeated in previous CAT papers.
  3. Embracing Simulated Exam Environment: To bolster my readiness for the actual exam, I knew I had to face the pressure of simulated exam conditions. I dedicated several weekends to undertaking CAT mock tests, strictly adhering to time limits and all rules, and simulating the real exam environment as closely as possible.

As I embarked on this focused journey, uncertainty lingered, but my determination remained unwavering. With my sights set on the CAT exam, I was eager to rise to the challenge and embrace the opportunities ahead.

If you’re looking to prepare for CAT 2023 at home, without coaching, then this comprehensive guide can come in handy.

The D-Day Strategy: Practice Makes Perfect

When I received my admit card, I discovered that I had been assigned the morning slot for the exam. This revelation prompted me to overhaul my entire timetable.

Weeks prior to the exam, I meticulously followed the same schedule as the actual exam day, ensuring that my mind and body would be fresh and active the morning of the exam.

A good night's sleep and an early morning revision became crucial components of my preparation. Despite my dad's snoring, which he very kindly accommodated, everything else went according to plan. I felt well-prepared and ready to face the exam with confidence.

Making Interviews Enjoyable

Contrary to the general opinion, I believe interviews are the most enjoyable part of the B-school admission experience. Interview after interview, I engaged in exciting conversations with the panels. My opinions were challenged, and my mettle was put to the test, but the process couldn't have been more fun.

During my IMT Interview, I had the pleasure of discussing environmental economics with one of the panelists, while the others delved deep into my motivations and aspirations. By the end of the interview, I felt confident, not necessarily of getting in, but of having showcased the best version of myself.

To prepare for the interview, I concentrated on several essential aspects that I believe contributed to my success:

  1. Self-Discovery and Motivation: The foundation of my preparation was understanding the deep motivation and passion driving my interest in Management, MBA, Marketing, etc. Knowing the 'why' behind my choices helped me communicate my aspirations genuinely and convincingly.
  2. Authenticity and Honesty: Embracing the philosophy of "Be yourself, everyone else is already taken," I approached the interview with complete authenticity. I didn't shy away from sharing both my strengths AND weaknesses. This not only demonstrated self-awareness but also showcased my willingness to learn and grow as a professional.
  3. Reflecting on Past Experiences: I carefully reviewed my past experiences and accomplishments, aligning them with the skills and qualities sought in a candidate for the MBA program. This allowed me to articulate how my journey prepared me for future challenges.

Apart from these, I followed the best practices for nailing interviews, i.e:

  • Showing Enthusiasm: Throughout the interview, I conveyed genuine passion and excitement for the field I was pursuing. My enthusiasm left a lasting impression, showcasing my dedication to my chosen path.
  • Researching the Institution: I thoroughly researched its offerings and values to demonstrate my genuine interest in the MBA program and the institution. This allowed me to showcase my knowledge during the interview.
  • Practicing Interview Etiquette: I practiced standard interview etiquette to present myself professionally. This included dressing appropriately, maintaining eye contact, and using a confident yet approachable tone.

Here's a final piece of advice for the interviews: YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT. B-schools are looking for "raw material" they can mold into excellent managers. To enhance your candidacy, demonstrate genuine enthusiasm and understand the 'Why?' behind your motivations. Embrace your imperfections, be true to yourself, and let your authentic passion shine through – it will undoubtedly leave a lasting and positive impression on your interviewers, setting you on the path to success!

CAT Exam Prep: Tips, Tricks & Resources

The Takshzila self-study course proved to be my greatest aid for all sections. Despite the underwhelming reputation of sectional mocks, I found them to be incredibly helpful.

Further, I made it a point to attempt at least one full mock per week. These resources played a pivotal role in my preparation, boosting my confidence and refining my skills in each section.

The selection process for IMT included a Statement of Purpose (SOP) round followed by a Written Ability Test (WAT) and a Personal Interview (PI). Among them, the SOP round was the most thrilling for me.

Being passionate about marketing, I had gathered extensive information on IMT. Leveraging my knowledge, I crafted a compelling SOP inspired by exclusive sessions, facilities, and projects known mainly to those affiliated with IMT as students or teachers. My SOP highlighted my deep interest in the institute and left a lasting impression on the selection committee.
