IIM Calcutta recently reported that 28 students of their Executive MBA course have tested positive for Covid-19 and 58 are quarantined. Seeing the rise in the number of cases Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) authorities are considering declaring the campus area as a contaminant zone till the situation comes under control.

The students who have been tested positive either have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic. Since the campus is virtually empty due to summer holidays, there is nothing to worry about.’ says Manish Thakur dean of IIM Calcutta.

Measures taken by IIM Calcutta to prevent Covid

Since students come from outside, the chances of a faster spread of the virus remain. As a precautionary measure for the rest of the students, IIM has shifted classes to online mode. However, students have not yet been asked to return to their homes, and are advised to take their classes from hostels until the situation gets better.

‘Students affected by covid-19 were quarantined in Tata Hall, which otherwise serves as an accommodation for the management development program. Offline classes will be suspended from Thursday and online classes will resume on Monday. The decision regarding the offline classes will be taken depending on the recovery rate of students’, says Manish Thakur

Kiosk to keep track of Covid Cases

Talking about the KMC’s prime target, Mayor Firhad said, The important step now is to stop the spread of the virus at this initial phase. If it can be stopped and kept under control then another pandemic situation can be averted.’

Seeing the rise of the cases, the authorities are planning to establish testing kiosks around the campus premises to keep a track of covid cases.

‘We have given a proposal for random tests to be conducted around the campus premises at an interval of three days. If the college authorities do not agree to cooperate on this account and plan to conduct tests through private labs, we will have no option other than declaring the campus a contaminant zone until the situation comes under control.’, says Firhad Hakim KMC Mayor.
