Can a small business initiative survive in a monopolistic market? It certainly can, if one knows what your customers actually want. Here is the story of Sachin Ahuja, an IIM Kozhikode student, whose wife pulled off setting up her cloud kitchen during the COVID pandemic-induced lockdown!
Ahuja’s wife managed to launch her cloud kitchen during the COVID lockdown successfully! As he now sees his wife’s business flourish, Sachin has some words of wisdom for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Starting from scratch and being successful
Sachin Ahuja describes himself as a marathoner, cyclist, author, and father on his LinkedIn bio. On 3rd July, Sachin posted about the second anniversary of his wife’s venture- ‘Richa’s Kitchen’.
Started in 2020, the cloud kitchen began as an initiative to help people during tough pandemic times, and later on, became a cloud kitchen business model. What Richa’s Kitchen provided people, especially the elderly ones whose children were away during the pandemic, was no less than a blessing - homemade food made with love and healthy ingredients!
Despite being 5 months pregnant during the initial days of her kitchen, Sachin’s wife did not back down on her initiative. Now, Richa’s Kitchen is a successful food outlet. Apart from this, his wife has also launched Richa’s Kitchen Supplies, which provides packaging material to all of India from Chandigarh.

The secret sauce for success
Sachin exclaims how he was his wife’s best and low-cost resource, her delivery boy and purchase manager as well as a domestic helper. Even though he had worked at IFB Industries and Maruti Suzuki before, Sachin’s new job responsibilities taught him valuable business lessons that he would not have learned otherwise.
Sachin reveals the three secrets to his wife’s successful business that may not resonate a lot with the business gurus. These are:
- No fancy menu cards
- No marketing
- Good taste and quality
Ahuja says, "My learning from this role is helping me today when I’m formally studying business from the eminent faculties of IIM K."
He has listed down some cardinal rules for young businesses who want to stand out in the monopolistic market. They are as follows.
Hundreds of start-ups get launched in India every year and a reasonable number of these fail to make it big. Sachin’s words of wisdom will act as a guidelight for all budding entrepreneurs who wish to set up a sustainable business in the hyper-competitive market.
