IIT Bombay admissions in joint PhD programme are now open
IIT Bombay admissions for its PhD programme in collaboration with Monash University of Australia are now open. The PhD programme is set to begin in June 2021. The last date to apply for admission is 7th of March, 2021. This joint venture, established in 2008, aims at equipping a pool of students to contribute in solution of global issues through research and development. The research spans across disciplines covering a wide range of subjects such as:
- Material Science/Engineering (including Nano, Metallurgy)
- Energy, Green Chem, Chemistry, Catalysis, Reaction Eng
- Math, CFD, Modelling, Manufacturing
- CSE, IT, Optimisation, Data, Sensors, Systems, Signal Processing, Control
- Earth Sciences and Civil Engineering (Geo, Water, Climate)
- Bio, Stem Cells, Bio Chem, Pharma, Food
- Semiconductors, Optics, Photonics, Networks, Telecomm, Power Eng
- Design, HSS, Management
IIT Bombay’s PhD Programme with Monash research academy attracts about 4000 applications every year. Students are given the opportunity to work under supervisors of both the institutes with at least one year in Australia. The PhD degree received at the end of course is affiliated to both, IIT Bombay & Monash University. The themes for the projects include:
- Advanced Computational Engineering, simulations and manufacture
- Infrastructural engineering
- Clean energy
- Water
- Nanotechnology
- Biotechnology and stem cell research
- Humanities & Social sciences
Eligibility Criteria
The prerequisites for applying for admissions are:
- First-class Master’s Degree or any other equivalent Master’s Degree
- First-class Bachelor’s Degree and a valid GATE score, if the candidate does not have a valid GATE score, 2 years’ work experience will be considered.
- English Language Proficiency requirement by Monash Research Academy through a course at the Monash University or a valid score in TOEFL or IELTS or other ELP tests.
The institute also states that with the competition really high, a competitive selection process will be followed throughout the admissions.
Admission Process
The process of IIT Bombay admissions involves the following steps:
- To apply candidates have to fill an Expression of Interest (EOI) Form, which will be used to evaluate the research interests, academic records and background of the applicant.
- If the EOI form is found suitable, the applicant will have to fill a full application form.
- After being shortlisted, the applicant will be called in for a personal interview, which is also the final stage of admission.
Scholarships Offered
The following scholarship structure is offered to the students:
- Rs 372,000 per annum scholarship for the first two years
- Rs 420,000 per annum after the first two years
- A grant of up to A$25,850 per annum in Australia
- A minimum of one year in Australia, working with a Monash University co-supervisor and waiver of international student tuition fees at Monash University.
The scholarship will be provided on criteria set by IIT Bombay and Monash University together, based on qualifications, performance and the grades of the student. The fee structure for the same is yet to be released. Check the website of IIT Bombay PhD Programme for more details.
