From Chennai To UK: IIT Madras & University Of Birmingham Offer Joint Masters Program

IIT Madras and the University of Birmingham have announced a joint master’s program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The joint M.Sc program will last for 18 months and selected students will get a chance to study at both universities, i.e. IIT Madras in Chennai and University of Birmingham in Birmingham, UK.
As per the announcement by the University of Birmingham, this is a first-of-its-kind education partnership between any Indian Institute of Technology and a UK Russell Group university.
Both, the University of Birmingham and IIT Madras are renowned for their educational initiatives and research programs. IIT Madras is one of the eight Institutes of Eminence in India and has a Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and AI. Meanwhile, the University of Birmingham is a partner in the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. It also has a world-renowned School of Computer Science.
Students who successfully complete the program will receive a single degree, awarded from both universities. The 18-month-long program is divided into three semesters or terms and includes a research project. After a compulsory term each at IIT Madras and the University of Birmingham, students will have the option to continue their studies at either of the two universities.

Eligibility Criteria
Students with the following academic scores will be eligible to apply:
- Indian undergraduate: Bachelor’s degree with 60% and above in Science and/or Engineering.
- Other: Equivalent of a UK2:1 Honours degree in a numerate discipline (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Economics, or another programme with substantial Mathematics content).
- Language: Your test scores should not be dated earlier than August 01, 2021.
- IELTS: Overall 6.5; with 6.0 in each component.
- TOEFL: TOEFL: Overall 88 with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, and 21 in Writing.
- PTE Academic (including online): PTE Academic 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills.
- Students who have achieved the following Indian XII high school scores in English would be offered a waiver from the above tests:
- India Standard XII (CBSE/ CISCE/ West Bengal): 75% or above.
- India Standard XII (other Indian state boards): 80% or above.
Please note:
- If the medium of instruction for your undergraduate degree was not English, it is mandatory to provide English Language Test scores from the given recognized tests.
- A valid English qualification is required on the enrolment date of the program, not the arrival date to the UK for the part of the program studied at Birmingham.
Selection Process & Course Fee
The selection process includes an online test and an online interview, both of which will be conducted in June. You can download the syllabus for the written test and a sample question paper here.
The final results will also be released in late June 2023, and the program starts in late July 2023.

Application Process
Here’s the step-wise application process:
- Register and create an account with Admissions Open 2023 at IIT Madras.
- Once the account is created (post email verification), complete the application form online and upload the required documents.
- Eligible candidates will be required to give an online test and interview, the results of which will be announced in late June.
