NTPC and ONGC launch special recruitment drive for women on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2021

This International women’s day, India’s largest energy conglomerate NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation Limited) along with the largest crude oil and natural gas company in India, ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited) launched a special recruitment drive only for women with the aim of filling the gender diversity gap prevalent in the country. The two state-run energy companies have taken many similar initiatives in the past to include women’s representation and participation in the workforce.

Initiatives by NTPC

By launching a special recruitment drive for women executives on Monday, NTPC became the first energy company in India to do so. The current number of employees in NTPC is 18,000. Additional incentives including waiving the application fee for women, paid parental leaves, maternity leave, sabbatical leave, NTPC special parental leave for surrogacy child adoption/childbirth have been given and adhered to, so that more number of women candidates apply for jobs and women participation in the workforce at NTPC increases

Past efforts of NTPC to uplift the status of women 

In January this year, an online training program on “Gender Sensitivity” was organized at NTPC coal mining headquarters where the key points discussed were:

  1. Achieving empowerment of women through independence
  2. Importance of gender equality and refraining from unequal treatment of men and women
  3. Safety of women workforce in coal mining sites 
  4. Gender Awareness, Gender Equality, Vishakha guidelines 1997, POSH Act 2013.

In the past couple of years also NTPC has taken initiatives to uplift the lives of women and girl children to help them become self-reliant. In May 2018, it launched “Girl Empowerment Mission” to empower and educate girls in and around NTPC projects. In this unique corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to support the cause of Girl Child, 392 girls in the age group of 10-12 years had participated in a four-week residential workshop. The project budget was INR 1.55 crores. 

Initiatives by ONGC 

ONGC has been constantly working in the past years to improve gender diversity in its workforce. Dr Alka Mittal who herself was the first woman to hold the charge of a full-time Director in ONGC’s history said that ONGC has added about 500 women to its workforce in the last five recruitment drives. Out of these 500 women, 80% recruited are from technical streams including drilling, production, geology, geophysics. She also said that women have been doing exceedingly well in legal discipline also.

Past initiatives of ONGC to upskill women

In 2017-18, ONGC had launched a “Women Skilling and Entrepreneurship Development Initiative” in the sector of gender, equality and women empowerment, senior citizens care in which the company imparted skill development training to 6058 women and youth. The project location was Bihar.

Aim of the recruitment drive for women 

The primary aim of the recruitment drive for women is to strengthen gender diversity as a parameter and to improve gender ratios as much as possible.
