QS World University Rankings 2023; IISc Top-Ranked Indian Institute At 155 & 8 IITs In Top 500

Quacquarelli Symonds, the UK-based company specializing in the analysis of higher education institutions around the world, has released the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings 2023. The number of Indian institutes in the QS World University Rankings 2023 has gone up to 41 from 35 last year.

Among the top-ranked institutes are mostly the tier-I colleges in engineering and management. However, only 3 institutes from India have made it to the top 100; they are IISc Bangalore, IIT Delhi, and IIT Bombay. The name of IISc Bangalore on the top came as a surprise as the institute moved up by 31 places to secure the 155th place among institutes globally.

On the other hand, both IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi have climbed up 11 places to rank at 172 and 174 respectively. Out of the 41 Indian institutes, 12 were able to improve their scores, 12 remained in the same position and 10 institutes saw a fall in rankings.

Scoring High On The Research Front

When it comes to research, India has come out on top by outranking all other institutes. In order to measure the impact of the research produced by the institutes, QS uses the 'citation per faculty (CpF)’ indicator. Going by the CPF indicator (adjusted according to faculty size) IISc Bangalore again tops the list emerging as the number one globally. In fact, the institute has scored a perfect 100/100 score in this metric.

Ben Sowter, the senior Vice President at QS, lauded the Indian universities for doing excellent work in research. "This edition of the rankings reflects the excellent work that several Indian universities are doing to improve their research footprint, with positive consequences for their reputation on the global stage."

However, at the same time he added, "Conversely, our dataset also suggests that the Indian higher education sector still struggles to provide adequate teaching capacity. Further expansion of provision- both within universities and across the sector as a whole - will be necessary if India is to continue reaching new heights."

Among the private institutes that made it to the QS Universities Rankings were Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, and OP Jindal Global University. Among the new entries is Chandigarh University (CU) which was established just 10 years ago.

The 2023 QS World University Rankings is the largest ever. The number of institutes in this year's list has gone up from 1300 last year to 1418 this year.
