New IIMs Placements 2022; Uptick In Salary Metrics As CTCs Make A Quicker Return To Pre-Pandemic Levels

The final placements at all the ‘new IIMs’ have been completed over the last three-four months. After a period of sluggish placement metrics across B-schools in India during the pandemic, 2022 saw a significant uptick. The positive trend was especially prominent in tier I and tier II b-schools with salary metrics in some cases even surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Among the b-schools where some semblance of pre-pandemic hiring levels was restored are the IIMs. While the first generation IIMs witnessed a massive increase in CTCs, the second generation IIMs - commonly called 'new IIMs', were not far behind. As markets are adapting to the impacts of the pandemic, growth is again back on the agenda for most companies. A consequence of this is the increased hiring by companies compared to the time of the pandemic.

The six ‘new IIMs’ have seen an increase in salary metrics like average, median and highest packages. What does it mean for students who are planning to take admission into one of these institutes? Is this hiring trend a one-time affair or will it continue over the next few years?

A comparative overview of the placements will give us the key to unlocking the questions that ‘new IIMs’ aspirants are facing today. 

New IIMs Placements 2022: A Comparative Overview

1. IIM Raipur

Among all the new IIMs, the Raipur-based institute witnessed the best highest CTC with one student from the batch getting INR 42.15 LPA. Along with IIM Udaipur, IIM Raipur also saw Strategy and Consulting emerge as the top recruiting sector, while in other IIMs, placements prominently took place in domains such as IT/ITes and BFSI.

• The highest CTC of INR 42.15 is a 40.5% increase from the previous year.
• The average salary in 2022 saw a 17.3% increase from the previous year.
• The batch size also increased by 2.9% from the previous year.
• Among the new IIMs, IIM Raipur had the second-highest number of recruiters at 113.

2. IIM Ranchi

IIM Ranchi offers two courses - MBA and MBA in HR, with MBA being the more popular course. The number of students in MBA is 253, while in MBA-HR it is 72 - a stark comparison when it comes to batch strength. Across the two batches at IIM Ranchi, IT/ITES emerged as the top recruiting domain with more than 30% of students from each batch taking up offers in this sector.

• At IIM Ranchi, the highest CTC in 2022 witnessed a 21.5% rise standing at INR 32.21 LPA.
• The average salary also saw a 10.1% increase, standing at INR 16.17 LPA.
• The batch size at IIM Ranchi also witnessed a massive 25.9% increase.
• Unlike most other new IIMs, the majority of the students at IIM Ranchi were not freshers; in fact, 40% of the batch had between 2-3 years of work experience.

3. IIM Rohtak

Among all the new IIMs, the highest CTC at IIM Rohtak was the second lowest (IIM Kashipur being the lowest) at INR 30 LPA. However, with the average highest CTC being INR 33.7 LPA across the 6 new IIMs, IIM Rohtak is not far away from it. With more than 80 recruiters participating in the IIM Rohtak final placements this year, around 50% were first-timers. 

• The highest CTC at INR 30 LPA is a 40.4% increase from the previous year.
• The average salary also witnessed a jump of 16.9% from the previous year.
• The batch size at IIM Rohtak decreased by 4.1% with 233 students in total.
• A huge 62.4% students from the batch from the students were freshers.

4. IIM Kashipur 

Among all the ‘new IIMs’, IIM Kashipur recorded the lowest highest CTC of INR 28.82 LPA. On the other hand, the number of students at IIM Kashipur was among the highest at 322. A total of 365 offers were made by a pool of 150+ company and out of them 53 were pre-placement offers (PPOs). Moreover, 60 out of the 150+ recruiters participating in the placement drive were first-timers.

• The highest CTC at INR 28.82 LPA was a 0.7% reduction from the previous placement season.
• The average salary of the batch witnessed a 8.3% increase from the previous year.
• The batch size of 322 this year was 23.8% increase from the last batch.
• With a total of 365 offers being accepted, IIM Kashipur also witnessed a 36.2% increase in the acceptance rate of placement offers.

5. IIM Trichy

IIM Trichy offers two courses - PGPM and PGPM-HR, and the maximum number of students (230) are enrolled in the PGPM course. The highest CTC for the PGPM batch at IIM Trichy was also comparatively higher at INR 34 LPA. However, in the PGPM-HR batch, the highest CTC was INR 17.6 LPA. A total of 110 recruiters participated in the placement process and rolled out 228 offers across the two batches. 

• At INR 34 LPA, IIM Trichy witnessed a 13.3% increase in the highest CTC in the PGPM batch.
• The average CTC at IIM Trichy was INR 17.01 LPA - an increase of 14.6% from the previous year.
• The batch size also saw a jump of 5.5% from the previous year with 230 students.
• Interestingly at IIM Trichy a 20% increase was witnessed in the average CTC of freshers.
• The number of pre-placement offers also saw a jump of 28% from the previous year at IIM Trichy.

6. IIM Udaipur

IIM Udaipur is among the best performers when it comes to the placement metrics of the six new IIMs. Apart from a comparatively better highest CTC of INR 35 LPA, IIM Udaipur also saw 4 students receiving international offers. Along with it, the institute also witnessed a substantial increase in the number of pre-placement offers as well. 

• The highest CTC witnessed a slight 1.4% increase from the previous year.
• The average salary at INR 17.5% was a 32.7% increase from the last placement season.
• The batch size at IIM Udaipur also increased by 13.2% from last year, standing at 318 students.
• A total of 315 students accepted offers during the placement drive - a 16.7% increase from the previous year.
