Tally Solutions launched a hiring challenge to test creative thinking and problem-solving skills in new engineers- Tally CodeBrewers 2022. The three of us- Rajib Mondal, Saatvik Nagpal, and Shubham Jain, decided to try our hands at the challenge posed to us. We all are students at Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta Institute of Technology and Management Delhi, and the deep friendship that we share motivated us to team up for this. We were the indestructible Team Code Treasurer and also the 2nd runner-up of Tally CodeBrewers 2022 - Commander of Full Stack track.
Our expectations going into the competition were to gain exposure to real-world product development in the industry. We also hoped to learn from the competition and grow both as future engineering professionals and also as individuals. Not only did the competition provide us with what we were looking for and but we also ended up becoming the 2nd runner ups from amongst 3500+ participants.
S For Strategy, S For Simplicity
The first round of the competition had two parts which we managed fairly well without much difficulty. But the second round of the competition which was the main coding challenge was a test of our abilities and efficiency. In this round, we were required to work on a product development problem and had only one weekend to come up with a complete solution. It was a difficult task to complete but we had a strategy in place and decided to proceed with it.
Our strategy was extremely simple and quite straightforward. We decided to finish the essential tasks which were required in the problem statement as the main focus, and also work on the additional tasks side by side to not lose time. That is we planned to foremostly prepare our MVP, then after finalizing the Tech Stack we were gonna use, we were to distribute the features among ourselves and set a deadline for each task.
It Wasn’t All Smooth Sailing
Even though we had a strategy in place, things do not always go as expected. We got delayed from the very start and started building our project a day late due to multiple events being scheduled on the same day. Then we also faced a lot of challenges while coding- sometimes our code worked and sometimes it did not. Another challenge we faced when working on this project was- the Google Authentication part. We spent a lot of time stuck on this particular part. However in the end we somehow managed to work all the issues out.
Lessons Learned!
The most important thing that we think one learns from such competitions is teamwork. Working with a group of people under tight deadlines with strict requirements makes one appreciate team effort. In addition, we learned a lot from each other. Saatvik Nagpal for instance has never worked with Firebase before this competition. During this competition, he learned to use Firebase, implement its libraries, and also learned to work on some other packages as well. The same goes for our teammate Rajib Mondal, who feels he learned a lot about working with both Firebase and Google Authentication during the competition.
Try, Try And Try Again!
Sometimes you learn from adversity, and that is exactly what happened to our team. When we think back on the moment which was the most special one, two come to mind. The first one was when it took us 10 hours to figure out the Google Authentication part, and when it finally clicked we faced a merge conflict and ended up losing the code. We then had to start all over again.
At that point we lost hope, we thought that we won’t be able to proceed further as we had nothing to show to the panelists just a day before the finale. However, we still kept trying. And soon we all got a jolt of fresh energy as we received a notification from the organizers informing us that we were selected for the finale. We were naturally shocked and amazed. This goes to show that if you keep marching on, things will take a turn for the good.
An Amazing Experience
Our team was extremely energetic, motivated, and supportive of each other. We all pushed each other to achieve our goal and that was to give it our all and aim for the win. And even though we coded only for two days, both Rajib and Shubham Jain were amazing and they quickly and efficiently developed the application. Saatvik gave his first presentation in front of a panel. He will forever remember his first ever presentation and will recall it fondly!
The competition was very well organized, the mentors were especially very supportive and it was a privilege being the mentee. The judgment of the competition was also extremely fair and constructive. All in all, the whole experience was an amazing one and it will always remain close to our hearts.
