Growing up in an Indian household is unlike any other, no matter which part of the country you live in. Indian parents have their own set of rules and expectations that are difficult to meet. That is exactly what happened when a US-based architect from Hyderabad told his father that he had graduated from Harvard University and the response he received made people laugh out loud online.

Haircut > Harvard?

Saeb Ali Khan recently graduated from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design with a Master of Architecture in Urban Design.

Khan celebrated his graduation by posting a photo of himself wearing a tassel cap and a black-maroon robe to a WhatsApp family group. Instead of congratulating his son, his father said, "You should have gotten a haircut today."

Khan joked about the all-too-familiar exchange in a Facebook group called Subtly Curry Traits.

"Brown dad: (OC) (Haircut > Harvard)," he wrote, accompanied by a screenshot of their conversation.

The Curious Case Of Brown Fathers

While some agreed with his father that he should have "shaved and gotten a haircut," others praised his appearance and jokingly compared it to that of great scientists with long hair, such as Albert Einstein and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

Khan's post quickly drew a lot of attention on the Facebook group, with many people commenting that their fathers react the same way. Most people argue that desi dads aren't good at offering words of encouragement or lavishing praise, but that doesn't mean they aren't proud. Most agreed it was their way of remaining humble.

As congratulations poured in, with people wishing Khan the best of luck in his future endeavors, some speculated that the message from his father might be the most precious memory from his graduation day years later.
