The first step to formally starting your career is an internship and at some point, you will find yourself running after them. Internships (even the unpaid ones) are so popular because it gives the valuable experience required to land a full-time role. Most companies prefer prospective employees who already have some experience in a field, and there is no better opportunity than an internship to develop valuable skillsets.

While on one hand, internships are a great learning curve, on the other they can be fun as well. In fact, with little to no effort, you can make internships a fun experience.

Wondering how? Let’s find out.

1. "Tell Us About Different Kinds Of Trees"

For starters, this is not the cliche, inspirational sort of learning, rather it's a funny truth about internships. One that often starts with the ‘lying on your resume’ trope. Of course, it’s satisfying to add some non-existential skills to your resume, just to make it look cooler.

But the jokes on us when the not-so-genuine resume makes it through the screening and onto the interview. Now, you’re on a caffeine-induced marathon trying to learn at least the definitions of those skills. After all, no one wants an interview to go like this:

Interviewer: “Tell us about different kinds of trees.”

You(probably): “Evergreen and deciduous?”

Interviewer: “Um.. this is a programming interview.”

2. White Lies

As an intern, this is something you might do a lot. Of course, we do not encourage you to lie to your employers, but at times it happens. It is a truth universally acknowledged that no one starts their work right before the due date.

And when your supervisor asks you “How’s the project coming along?”, you reply with an “It's going great! I’m working on a few different approaches.”, knowing fully well that you are nowhere close to starting it. Certainly, it is worth a chuckle, but one must always remember to keep a good work ethic and submit their work on time.

3. Danger Deadlines

It is a commonly known fact that the rate of our productivity is directly proportional to how close we are to a deadline. And for an intern who’s a college student, meeting deadlines is like skirting around the edge of a volcano.

You will find yourself in the late hours of the night, poring over a million open tabs in your browser, each for a different assignment with a touch of existential crisis. But the next day, you will probably be bragging and joking with your friends about how much you could pull off within a night.

4. The Holy Grail of Copy and Paste

There is nothing more refreshing than finding the exact data we need online and being able to copy it. For content writers and designers, this might get a little tricky. But for programmers, there is nothing more sacred than the infinite archives of GitHub and StackOverflow, where you can find the answer to essentially everything. It is all well and good unless someone asks you to explain your project, now that could be a little nerve-racking.

5. Group Projects

Group projects are funny and chaotic, be it academic or internship. And when you’re a group of interns pitched together to submit a functional group project, the disorder is an unwelcome guest. It will be a long season of group calls where no one seems to get anything done and a series of miscommunicated messages. Yet, it is a proud moment when your hard work pays off, and each component put together makes a perfect end product. And once it is over, it will surely be a humorous memory.

6. Interns Making Mistakes

As interns, we are bound to make a lot of mistakes. Something that has led to us being the subject of endless jokes. It could be an accidental email or a message in the group chat that would leave us wishing we never existed. But there’s no reason to worry; trust in your team, and they will help you turn an embarrassing incident into nothing more than a funny story to tell during a team meeting. After all, always remember- no matter how big of a mistake you made, someone has made an even bigger one; like the intern who once took down Spotify globally.

7. Joining In For The Swags

Let’s be honest, everyone loves swags. So much that sometimes the driving factor to pursue an internship is due to its swags. And months later, you’ll be looking at your collection of goodies with a satisfied face while people shake their heads at your actions with a smirk.

8. Doing More Work Because You’re Lazy

Now, this might be relatable to a lot of people. When you’re feeling rather lazy to accomplish a task, you might unknowingly find a much more creative way to solve it than what's required. Just think about this scenario, you might be required to sign in and mark your attendance for the day.

But because you find it too tedious to spare five minutes for this, you instead immerse yourself in work for hours and come up with an automated attendance program. Now you feel much smarter and the company gets a new tool too!

9. Unexpected Praise

We all love praise. We love it even more when it's least expected. Some days, you might not be on your best game, and you feel that your work is not up to the mark. You turn it in, expecting tirades of criticism. Instead, you are met with praise!

And then you’d think how is this even possible? The next time you are at your intern meet-up, this will be the story of the day - how you used the wrong formula but ended up with the right answer.

10. The Experience & The Team

What truly makes an internship memorable, is the team you work with. No matter how interested you are in the field, without proper mentors and co-workers, it is possible to feel left out. Focus on the journey, the people along with you, and the experience that comes along with it. Years later, when you are a full-time professional, these might be days that you fondly recall.
