The Indian Institutes Of Technology (IIT) of Madras and Delhi were recently in the news for establishing offshore campuses in Tanzania and the UAE, respectively. These two prestigious IITs also performed impressively well in the recently released National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking by the Ministry of Education.

The competitive landscape between IIT Madras and IIT Delhi is quite visible going by the prestigious NIRF ranking. In the overall NIRF ranking, IIT Madras took the first spot while IIT Delhi took the third spot. The ongoing tug of war to secure the top spot is a healthy one as it involves academic and research excellence in order to prepare the young and vibrant minds of the country.

Moreover, like IIT Madras which recently became the first IIT to sign a MoU to open its offshore IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus, IIT Delhi too is all set to establish its offshore campus in Abu Dhabi as part of the 'IITs Go Global' campaign.

Importance Of IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi Campus

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Ministry of Education and Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) to establish the first campus of IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi. The decision to establish an IIT campus in the UAE was first announced in August 2022, reinforcing the vision statement jointly issued by India and the UAE in February of the same year.

The MoU reflects the shared vision of both nations placing educational excellence, innovation, knowledge exchange, and investments in human capital as the foundations for future prosperity and enablers of long-term economic growth and sustainable development.

Union Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan said, “This MoU is an example of New India’s innovation and expertise, and the IIT Delhi campus in UAE will be an edifice of India-UAE friendship.”

He further added, “It will set a brand new template for leveraging the power of knowledge for both mutual prosperity and global good. It also unfolds a new chapter in the internationalization of India’s education”.

Sara Musallam, Chairman of ADEK, commented that MoU represents an important step in Abu Dhabi’s commitment to accelerate a world-class education system that serves the national development goals and priorities. She added that the MoU reflects a shared commitment to providing world-class educational experiences and anticipates that the IIT Delhi – Abu Dhabi partnership will support the transition towards fostering an environment that nurtures innovation and accelerates high-level research.
