Some common mistakes that aspirants should avoid during JEE Main 2021
The first session of JEE Main 2021 will be held from 23 February - 26 February 2020. There is no change in the syllabus this year but the paper will have 90 questions out of which 75 will be marked and 15 will be optional (with no negative marking). The exam will be held in the morning and evening shifts.
Common mistakes that candidates should avoid
- Do not guess, only answer a question when you are sure about its answer: The paper has negative marking so it is not advised to choose answers which are based on guesswork. Candidates should ideally leave the questions they are not sure about as an unanswered question will fetch 0 marks but a wrong answer will result in negative marking.
- Believe in yourself: The candidates should have a firm belief in themselves and in their preparation. If you believe in yourself no one can stop you from achieving your dreams. Motivation is a key factor for everything one does in their life. It is essential to believe in yourself for this or any other exam.
- Read the instructions mentioned very carefully: Candidates should read each instruction carefully to ensure no important information is missed. Many essential details regarding duration, sections, etc are mentioned in the instructions therefore they should not be missed by the candidate at any cost.
- Proper time distribution for each section: It is essential to distribute your time section-wise. This makes it easier to solve your paper on time. Make sure that you are not spending more time than required for any section. It is advised to spend 40 minutes on chemistry, 60 minutes on math, and 80 minutes on physics respectively. But it may change according to the difficulty level of the 3 sections in the paper. The candidate needs to act accordingly and manage their time efficiently.
- Read all questions properly: Reading every question carefully before attempting is crucial as it enables one to understand it properly. Candidates can avoid errors if they read the questions thoroughly. Certain small details which can help the candidate in understanding the question might get missed if the student does not read the entire question carefully.
- Selection of section: It is ideal to prioritize chemistry before moving on to the others. This section generally consumes the least amount of time which makes it easier to finish early. But again it depends solely on the candidate to choose which section to attempt in which order as it can vary according to every student’s interest and knowledge.
- Read the options carefully: It is equally crucial to read all four options carefully. Do not rush while going through them. Giving adequate time to read them helps one understand and deduce better. Rushing can often make aspirants miss out on the correct answer. Many times options of a particular question look very similar and can confuse the student if they are not going through each of them carefully.
- Don’t try to understand concepts instantly: Leave the concepts which are new for the end. It is a good practice to solve everything you know first before moving on to new concepts. They can take a lot of your time if you are not familiar with them previously so try to avoid questions that require the application of a concept that you have not studied before or are not sure about.
- Stay calm: Staying calm is essential for everything one does in life, more so in an examination. It can help aspirants achieve what they are capable of. Whenever you find time during the examination, try to take a couple of long breaths as it puts the mind at ease. Try to destress yourself by avoiding overthinking and just focussing on the moment.
- Time distribution for each question: Not spending too much time on a single question is equally important. Devoting more time to a challenging question will leave one with lesser time for other simpler questions. It is ideal to spend no more than three minutes on each question. Rather than stressing about questions that the candidate finds difficulty in solving, they should move on and attempt the ones they are confident about.
