IIT Joint Admission Test (JAM) is an annual examination conducted since 2004 every year for admission of students into postgraduate programs in science offered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc). IIT JAM 2021 is being conducted by IISc, Bangalore. The test will be Computer Based (CBT) conducted in the online mode and will consist of eight papers:

  • Biotechnology
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • Geology
  • Mathematics
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Physics
  • Economics

The questions will be of objective type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NATs).

  • February 14, 2021: IIT JAM 2021 examination
  • March 20, 2021: Announcement of results 
  • April 15-28, 2021: Submission of Application on the JAM official website
  • June 16, 2021: Declaration of 1st Admission list
  • July 1, 2021: Declaration of 2nd Admission list
  • July 16, 2021: Declaration of 3rd Admission list
  • July 20, 2021: Closure of Admissions through JAM 2021

IIT JAM 2021 syllabus and paper pattern

Subject-wise syllabus of IIT JAM 2021 exam:

  • Biotechnology syllabus: IIT JAM 2021 biotechnology syllabus would include biology till the graduate level, as well as mathematics and physics syllabus till class 12th.
  • Chemistry syllabus: It includes organic, inorganic and physical chemistry.
  • Economics syllabus: It consists of macroeconomics, microeconomics, Indian economy, statistics in economics and mathematics for economics.
  • Geology syllabus: includes geomorphology, applied geology, planet earth, structural geology, stratigraphy, palaeontology, petrology, mineralogy and economic geology.
  • Mathematical statistics syllabus: It will include sequences and series, differential calculus, integral calculus, matrices, probability, standard and joint distributions, random variables, standard distributions, limit theorems, estimation and testing of hypotheses.
  • Physics syllabus: It includes mechanics, general properties of matter, oscillations, waves and optics, devices and electronics, electricity and magnetism, kinetic theory, thermodynamics and modern physics.

The paper has 60 questions divided into three sections of 30, 10, and 20 questions each. Negative marking will be there in section A. For one mark questions, one-third will be deducted in case of a wrong answer, while for two markers, two-third will be deducted. The duration of the paper is three hours.

Tips to remember during the exam prep

  • Take JAM mocks: Take IIT JAM 2021 mocks available online to get a taste of the actual exam scenario. Analyse the results and work on the weak areas. It is important that enough time is given not just while taking the test but also for analyzing the results and drawing conclusions.
  • Solve previous years’ questions papers: Refer to questions that have appeared in the exam previously to know the usual difficulty level as well as the frequency of certain types of questions in the paper.
  • Consult your seniors: Talk to your seniors who have appeared in the test previously so as to get an idea about the speed of writing as well as the atmosphere during the exam. 
  • Make short notes: While finishing up your prep, make short notes of things that you’ll need to remember and can be recalled with just one look.
  • Revise old notes: Revise the old detailed notes that you made during your preparation. Don’t start new topics when the exam is too close. Instead, focus on gaining confidence in topics that you think are your stronger areas.
  • Go with a calm mind: Lastly, keep a clear mind before the exam. Mental stress and anxiety need to be kept at bay especially during the exam. Thus, give importance to sleeping well and eating healthy, especially as exam approaches.
