85% Of Engineering Graduates Cannot Be Employed Directly; Infosys Foundation Chairman Sudha Murty Tells At A Convocation

According to Sudha Murty, the chairman of Infosys Foundation, 85% of engineering graduates are not immediately employable. She has suggested that there is a strong need to improve the quality of engineering education in India.

Ms. Murty was speaking at the second and third convocation of KLE Technological University in Hubballi where she is a board member. She complained that most engineering graduates only learned things that concerned their college examination.

As a result, employers need to train freshers before they can fully realize their potential as an employee.

"The students don't explore beyond their immediate requirement and they remain unemployable," Murty said.

Encouraging students to make the learning process both fun and effective, she advised students to treat learning as an endless process. Murty also stressed the importance of working hard to achieve something worthwhile.

"They (students) should realize that their learning doesn't end with graduation. Learning is an endless process. Every day is an opportunity to learn. In fact, life is no college and there are neither teachers nor syllabus. You have to learn lessons every day on your own. In fact, every day is an examination in professional life. You should never forget your college and never forget your country," Murty said.

The convocation event was also attended by Anil Sahasrabudhe, the chairman of All-India Council for Technical Education. Mr. Sahasrabudhe talked about the use of educational technology tools and how it will increase in the coming days.

"We should keep moving forward to ensure that we are ready to face the challenges of the future. Online lectures and other modern tools that were adopted during the lockdown, could become a regular feature in the future," he said.

Interestingly, Dr. Sahasrabudhe was a former student of KLE BVB College of Engineering and Technology. With a touch of nostalgia, he congratulated KLE University for successfully providing quality education during the pandemic.

However, what stood out most was Ms. Murty's advice to students to focus on work ethic. "Work with all your mind and heart. That is the real merit." After that, she added, "Don't run after money. If you do so, money will run away from you."
