An offer letter from the Indian technology giant TCS is a dream come true for many. The IT firm conducts both on-campus and off-campus drives to recruit techies from colleges. Let us go through the interview process of TCS, with a special focus on the eligibility criteria and interview rounds for job opportunities in the engineering domain.

Job roles offered by TCS

Job offers are released by the company to freshers, providing them with the designation of Assistant Systems Engineer - Trainee. Within a year, they get promoted to assistant systems engineer and then systems engineer. For experienced candidates, job roles such as IT analyst, assistant consultant, and database administrator are offered. Apart from a technical role, management roles are also provided for people with career aspirations in management. In addition to technical knowledge, domain knowledge is also assessed for the candidates who have prior work experience.

Eligibility criteria for the TCS recruitment

Freshers who are willing to participate in recruitment drives, both on-campus and off-campus, should have a minimum of 60% in their semesters with no standing arrears. Experienced candidates are expected to have 60% in graduation or post-graduation, irrespective of their stream. Though engineers receive higher pay when compared to other graduates, TCS accepts candidates with a college degree from any stream. One point to note here is that the gap in education should be less than two years. If it is more than two years, then HR might look for supporting documents to justify your gap in education. The timeline for the TCS recruitment process is as follows:

TCS hiring process and rounds of interviews

Multiple rounds of interviews are conducted in the selection process which is subjected to change from time to time. The TCS NQT exam is also a channel through which candidates can get screened for recruitment in the company. As per the latest selection process, TCS conducts four rounds of interviews. The interview rounds are similar to other recruitment companies, where in most cases, the communication skills of candidates are given weightage in addition to their programming skills.

Let us understand more about the interview rounds in detail below.

  • Written round - It consists of four sections with 90 minutes to complete. These tests are conducted in authorized exam centers. Below are the sections:
    1. Quantitative aptitude test - It contains basic questions to evaluate the aptitude and logical level thinking of a candidate. One point to note here is that this test comes with a negative marking system. There are 20 questions that need to be attempted in 40 minutes. Though the questions seem to be easier at the first sight, a lot of calculations are required to solve each problem. Candidates with good practice in aptitude questions can easily crack this test.
    2. Programming language test - This section evaluates the programming skills of candidates, where basic questions from computer science and other programming languages are compiled to test technical knowledge. For example, questions from C, C++, PHP, HTML, CSS, Java, and other Java platforms could be asked in this section. The section features multiple-choice questions, with 20 minutes duration to complete them.
    3. Coding round - Both the logical level thinking and technical skills are measured in this round. Candidates are provided with a problem to solve through a programming language of their choice. This section comes with a deadline of 20 minutes to solve two questions. Candidates are given a coding environment where they can play around with a code in any programming language of their choice.
    4. Email writing - Within 10 minutes, candidates are asked to write an email with the hints provided. The main reason this section is included in the hiring process is to measure the communication skills of candidates.
  • Technical interview - Candidates who clear the written round at authorized exam centers are called for a technical discussion with an interview panel. There is no common rule regarding the interview questions being asked in TCS. However, candidates can refer to portals where employees have shared their interview experiences before joining TCS. In a nutshell, most of the questions asked in this round are about programming languages to evaluate technical skills.
  • Managerial round - TCS included this round in its selection process to measure how a candidate works under pressure. Stress handling is the key to clearing this round.
  • HR round - This is the final round of the selection process, where a candidate is assessed with both communication and interpersonal skills by an HR. The pay discussion also happens in this phase. Candidates are also provided with a list of job locations, where they can prioritize and provide two to three locations to the HR. Based on the availability in that location, job offers are released to the selected candidates.

Quantitative Aptitude Syllabus

A number of topics are included in the aptitude section. Numerical methods, number systems, equations, percentages, profit and loss, probability, permutation and combination, mensuration, areas, averages, sets, functions, and progressions are some of the important topics, to begin with. The TCS NQT exam pattern also consists of the same sections with a similar syllabus.

TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT)

The company conducts a National Qualifier Test to assess the technical skills of the candidates. This examination is a multi-level assessment to weigh the below aspects:

  • Core competencies required for entry-level jobs
  • Industry-specific technical knowledge
  • Validation of skill set required to perform various job roles
